Enterprise Week
Session 2
Session 2 was 'A career in Journalism, Marketing Communications, PR, Creative Writing and Storytelling' ran by Rachael Kerr.
Rachael Kerr is a freelance Journalist, she primarily works for 2 companies :
Story Harvesters - a programme which works with the elderly and disabled, were these people come to learn creative writing and try to get their stories written down, Rachael gave us an example of a woman who had come joined the programme and had, with help from Rachael had a book published filled with stories from the womans life.
As well as Story Harvesters, Rachael also worked with Welcome Words as a Copyrighter, something she had been doing for 5 years. Welcome Words is a company contracted to help companies advertise their business, a company for example Tesco could approach Welcome Words with an idea for an advert and Welcome Words will create an advertisement based upon the idea Tesco had approached them with. Kerr's main work with the company consisted of her creating flyers and leaflets for various companies.
Rachael described her job as a 'Portfolio Career', this meant that she did various works for different companies and could often pick and choose what she worked on, being able to do a little bit of something for one company then something else for another, giving her a wide range of job opportunites and experiences.
Rachael Kerr has had alot of jobs in the past, initially training as a teacher she decided it wasnt really what she was interesting in, she then began signing up for various courses to develop her skills in other areas, this is why Kerr has the resources to have a 'Portfolio Career' because of all the areas shes trained in and worked as.
Rachael ended the talk with a few lessons she'd learnt throughout her career.
She talked about the impact, we as people make on others, which reminded me of Jonathon Emerys lesson that to keep in touch with people you work with and keep professional, as the contacts could be beneficial later on.
She also talked about Nikes 'Just Do It', the reason shes had so many different jobs is because she wanted to try different things, she wasnt held down by previous training and ideas if she wanted to try something new, she would.
